Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder has been fined ₹1 lakh by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for breaching protocol during an IPL 2026 match, after he was seen using a mobile phone in the dugout.
The incident occurred during Rajasthan Royals’ clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati, where dugout areas fall under strict Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA) regulations. While team officials are permitted limited phone access in designated spaces like dressing rooms, usage within the dugout is prohibited.
Following the viral footage, the BCCI issued a show-cause notice to Bhinder, seeking an explanation within 48 hours. Although he responded, the board’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) found the clarification unsatisfactory.
Confirming the development, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the breach was treated seriously but noted it was Bhinder’s first offence. As a result, the board opted for a monetary penalty along with a strict warning, instead of imposing a suspension.
Officials reiterated that even minor violations within the PMOA are closely monitored due to their potential implications on the integrity of the game. The BCCI also urged all stakeholders to adhere to established protocols strictly.
With the issue now settled, Rajasthan Royals will shift focus back to on-field action as they prepare to face Kolkata Knight Riders in their next fixture at Eden Gardens.
