World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka continued her impressive run at the French Open, defeating Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-3 in a high-quality fourth-round clash to book her place in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
The victory marked Sabalenka’s third win over Osaka this season and extended her remarkable streak to 14 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final appearances. The Belarusian also remains the only player left in the women’s draw with Grand Slam final experience.
Osaka made a strong start to the contest, racing into an early lead as Sabalenka struggled to settle. The Japanese star capitalised on a series of unforced errors, including a double fault from the top seed on a crucial break point, to take control of the opening exchanges.
However, Sabalenka quickly regained her footing. Producing a series of powerful forehand winners, she broke back to level the match before steadily asserting her authority. Once she found her rhythm, the world No. 1 dominated on serve and did not face another break point for the remainder of the contest.
The Belarusian’s aggressive baseline game and consistency ultimately proved too much for Osaka, as she wrapped up the victory in straight sets to continue her quest for a maiden French Open title.
Speaking after the match, Sabalenka said she was focused solely on her own game and not dwelling on expectations.
“I’m just trying to be focused on myself and make sure that when I’m there competing, I’m bringing my best level. I’m fighting and doing everything I can to get this trophy,” she said.
Sabalenka will next face Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals after the 25th seed reached her first Grand Slam last-eight appearance by defeating Madison Keys in three sets.
With several top contenders already eliminated from the tournament, Sabalenka’s experience and consistency make her one of the leading favourites to lift the title in Paris.
