In a major development, a Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Poltava has claimed the lives of at least 41 people and left over 180 injured, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attack, which targeted an educational institution and a nearby hospital, is reportedly one of the deadliest since the war began in February 2022.
President Zelenskyy took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share the news. “I received preliminary reports on the Russian strike in Poltava. According to available information, two ballistic missiles hit the area. They targeted an educational institution and a nearby hospital, partially destroying one of the telecommunications institute’s buildings,” Zelenskyy said.
“People were trapped under the rubble. Many people were rescued, but more than 180 were injured. Unfortunately, there are many casualties. As of now, we know that 41 people were killed. My deepest condolences to all of their relatives and loved ones,” Zelenskyy added.

Zelenskyy mourned the loss of life and vowed to hold those responsible accountable. The Ukrainian President has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the strike and has called on the international community for immediate support.
Zelenskyy further reiterated his plea for global assistance, emphasizing that the continued delay in providing these systems is costing lives. “Ukraine needs air defense systems and missiles now, not sitting in storage. Long-range strikes that can protect us from Russian terror are needed now, not later. Every day of delay, unfortunately, means more lost lives.,” he urged.
