In a welcome relief for residents of the National Capital Region (NCR), the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Sunday lifted the Stage-I restrictions of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) following a notable improvement in air quality.

The revocation comes just two days after the emergency curbs were imposed following a sudden surge in air pollution. According to an official release from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 179 on Sunday, falling within the ‘Moderate’ category as per the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) daily bulletin.
The CAQM Sub-Committee, which oversees the implementation of GRAP measures in Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas, met earlier in the day and unanimously decided to roll back the Stage-I restrictions after reviewing current air quality indicators and weather forecasts.
The decision was influenced by improved meteorological conditions, including strong surface winds and light rainfall, which significantly helped disperse pollutants. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast that the AQI in Delhi is likely to remain in the ‘Moderate’ range over the coming days.
“In view of the significant improvement in air quality and favorable weather predictions, the Sub-Committee has decided to revoke the Stage-I measures of GRAP with immediate effect,” the official release stated.
Stage-I of GRAP typically includes restrictions on construction and demolition activities, regulation of vehicular movement, and control measures on industries that contribute to air pollution.
Despite the revocation, the Commission has urged all concerned agencies across NCR states to remain vigilant and ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations and pollution control norms as laid down by the Ministry of Environment, CPCB, and state pollution boards.
Authorities emphasized that while the situation has improved, continued coordination and compliance are essential to sustain air quality gains, particularly as summer winds down and seasonal shifts begin to influence pollution patterns once again.
