Anti-CAA protest: Jamia protesters stopped as they try to march towards Parliament

Date:

Delhi once again witnessed on Monday protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

Delhi Police pushed back the anti-CAA protesters in Jamia Nagar after they breached barricades and tried to move towards the Parliament today.

The Delhi DCP made announcements asking the agitators to move back as, he said, they didn’t have permission to move ahead. This protest was called by Jamia Coordination Committee from Jamia to the Parliament.

Amid heavy deployment of security personnel in and around Jamia Millia Islamia University, the protesters including several women began their march against CAA, NRC and NPR from Jamia’s gate no 7.

Besides this, protesters started from Mandi House with placards and banners of all sizes and colours around 11 am and marched towards Jantar Mantar via Barakhamba Road and Tolstoy Road.

The protest march called Sansad Gherao was organised under the banner of the Welfare Party of India. The protesters were raising slogans against the government and the amended act, saying that they will protest until the CAA is revoked.

“We are registering our protest against the government and we will keep protesting until the CAA is revoked,” said a protester.

The clash came as the Supreme Court today issued notices to the Centre and the Delhi government over the two-month-long protest at Shaheen Bang, which has come to be known as the epicentre of the agitation against the controversial law.

Except for Muslims, the CAA grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
