Amid the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, which has resulted in multiple casualties and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has voiced deep concern and called for a collective effort to end the violence. Lammy emphasized the need for a full and independent investigation into the recent events, led by the United Nations.
‘The people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events of the past few weeks. The last two weeks in Bangladesh have seen unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life. A transitional period has been announced by the Chief of the Army Staff,” Lammy said.

Lammy urged all parties involved to work together to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed. “All sides now need to work together to end the violence, restore calm, de-escalate the situation and prevent any further loss of life,” Lammy said.
Lammy also expressed the UK’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in its transition towards a peaceful and democratic future. He underscored the strong bonds between the two nations, rooted in shared Commonwealth values and significant people-to-people connections.
The recent unrest in Bangladesh, primarily driven by student protests against a government job quota system, has escalated into widespread opposition against Hasina and her ruling Awami League party. According to local media reports, at least 95 people, including 14 police officers, have died, and hundreds have been injured in clashes in Dhaka.
Earlier in the day, Sheikh Hasina, aged 76, resigned and fled the country, heading to India with her sister in a military helicopter. Following her departure, Bangladesh’s military chief General Waker-uz-Zaman called on protesters to cease violence and announced the formation of an interim government.
