BJP Leaders Slam Rahul Gandhi For Vacating Wayanad Seat

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have launched scathing criticisms against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his decision to vacate the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, accusing him of deceiving the constituency’s voters.

Rahul Gandhi, who won from both Wayanad and Raebareli Lok Sabha seats, on Monday announced his intention to retain Raebareli and vacate Wayanad. This decision has sparked backlash from BJP leaders, including former Union Ministers Rajeev Chandrasekhar and V Muraleedharan.

In a statement to newswire ANI, Chandrasekhar described Gandhi’s move as an insult to the people of Wayanad. “He hid from them the fact that he was also going to contest in Raebareli. He deceived them, and today, after they have supported him in good faith, he is washing his hands and saying I am going to Raebareli. It is a betrayal of the people of Wayanad,” Chandrasekhar said.

Muraleedharan echoed similar sentiments, alleging that the Congress party aims to establish Wayanad as a Gandhi family constituency. “It’s an insult to the entire state of Kerala and especially to the people of Wayanad,” he remarked. He also questioned Priyanka Gandhi’s candidacy in Wayanad, stating, “Why Priyanka Gandhi, who has no connection with Kerala, is contesting from Wayanad?”

The controversy erupted after Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge announced Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature from Wayanad at a special press conference on Monday. Rahul Gandhi subsequently informed the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office about his decision.

“If Priyanka Gandhi wins from Wayanad, three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family will be in Parliament,” the BJP leaders pointed out, referring to Sonia Gandhi in Rajya Sabha and Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.

Responding to the criticism, Priyanka Gandhi assured her commitment to Wayanad while maintaining her ties with Amethi and Raebareli. “I am very happy to represent Wayanad and will work hard to be a good representative,” she stated. “My relationship with Raebareli and Amethi is long-standing and will continue. I will also support my brother in Raebareli.”

The developments underscore the intensifying political maneuvering ahead of the Lok Sabha bypoll in Wayanad, signaling a potentially pivotal moment for the Congress party and the broader political landscape in Kerala.
