Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday for a meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate, as reported by both Canadian and American media. Flight trackers first identified a jet with the prime minister’s callsign heading toward Florida, just days after Trump threatened to impose import tariffs on Canada once he takes office.
Trudeau’s plane was confirmed to have landed at Palm Beach International Airport late in the afternoon, according to Flightradar. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported that Trudeau was scheduled to dine with Trump, with Canada’s Public Safety Minister, Dominic LeBlanc, accompanying him.
The prime minister’s office has yet to officially confirm the trip. This visit comes after Trump’s announcement on social media, where he warned of import tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, which sparked concerns in Canada.
More than 75% of Canada’s exports, totaling Can$592.7 billion ($423 billion), were directed to the United States last year, with nearly two million Canadian jobs dependent on this trade.
While some speculate that Trump’s tariff threat is an empty gesture or a tactic for upcoming trade talks, Trudeau rejected this idea when addressing reporters in Prince Edward Island. “When Donald Trump makes statements like that, he means to follow through,” Trudeau remarked. “There’s no doubt about it.”
