Atlanta: FIFA World Cup debutants Cape Verde delivered a remarkable defensive performance to hold European champions Spain to a goalless draw in one of the biggest shocks of the FIFA World Cup so far on Monday.
Ranked second in the world and packed with attacking talent, Spain dominated possession and created numerous chances but failed to find a way past a resilient Cape Verde side making its first-ever appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
Spain fired 27 shots during the contest but could not break the deadlock, matching their highest number of attempts in a World Cup match without scoring. The only other time Spain registered 27 shots and failed to score was against Paraguay at the 1998 World Cup, a match that also ended 0-0.
The standout performer for Cape Verde was veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who produced a series of crucial saves to frustrate the Spanish attack. The 40-year-old made seven stops in total and was named Player of the Match for his heroics.
Vozinha came to his team’s rescue repeatedly, denying Mikel Oyarzabal’s header, stopping Ferran Torres from close range and keeping out efforts from Aymeric Laporte, Mikel Merino and Marc Cucurella. At 40 years and 12 days old, he also became the oldest player to feature for Cape Verde in the nation’s World Cup debut.
Spain’s frustration grew as the match progressed. Torres struck the post from six yards out in the first half, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was introduced in search of a breakthrough. However, Cape Verde’s disciplined defensive structure continued to hold firm.
The underdogs nearly made an impact at the other end as well. Diney Borges found himself unmarked in a promising position, but his effort was blocked by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón.
Cape Verde’s resistance was epitomized late in the game when defender Pico Lopes produced a vital block in the 88th minute to deny Oyarzabal what appeared to be a potential match-winning opportunity.
Spain controlled much of the contest and registered 12 shots in the opening half alone, but a combination of wasteful finishing and Cape Verde’s determined defending ensured the score remained unchanged.
The result extends Spain’s winless run in FIFA World Cup matches to four games, equaling their longest such streak at the tournament, previously recorded between the 1982 and 1986 editions.
While the draw leaves Spain with a point, questions remain about their ability to convert dominance into goals. They will look to bounce back when they face Saudi Arabia on June 21.
For Cape Verde, the historic point marks a memorable start to their maiden World Cup campaign and a result that will be celebrated long after the final whistle.
