The death toll from the devastating blaze that tore through several high-rise apartment towers in northern Hong Kong’s Tai Po district has climbed to 36, the city’s leader John Lee confirmed. At least 279 residents are still missing, while multiple others are hospitalised.

Fire officials said they responded to multiple emergency calls shortly before 3 p.m., and within minutes the situation escalated to a major five-alarm fire, the highest emergency level in the city.
More than a hundred fire engines and dozens of ambulances were dispatched as firefighters battled intense heat, falling debris, and thick smoke. The extreme conditions made it difficult for them to reach upper floors where several people were believed to be trapped.
Many of the affected buildings were covered in bamboo scaffolding and protective netting due to ongoing renovation work, which may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. Residents described scenes of chaos and fear, with some elderly occupants unable to evacuate in time.
