Former US President and Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump is safe after a potential assassination attempt in south Florida, just two months after a gunman tried to kill him at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The FBI is investigating the assassination bid. A man reportedly with an AK style rifle pointed the firearm’s muzzle into Donald Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida as Trump was playing a round. This prompted the US Secret Service to open fire. According to an official FBI statement, “The former President is safe and unharmed, and the incident is being investigated.”
The gunman has been detained and identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, according to the three law enforcement sources. Routh is a self-employed affordable housing builder in Hawaii who had earlier criticized the former President on social media.
According to reports, the gunman was 300-500 yards away from Trump and a secret service agent opened fire on the man after spotting a rifle through the Golf Course’s fence.
