External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels on Tuesday, reaffirming the growing momentum in the India-European Union partnership. The meeting underscored shared commitments to counter-terrorism, economic cooperation, and an ambitious roadmap for strategic collaboration.
In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar shared details of the meeting, highlighting a mutual commitment to combating terrorism. “Pleased to call on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this morning. Welcomed her strong condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and solidarity in combatting terrorism,” he wrote. He also noted discussions on advancing the India-EU partnership in areas such as trade, technology, connectivity, and security.

President von der Leyen echoed the sentiment, calling Jaishankar a “friend” and affirming the deepening strategic bond between the EU and India. “The EU-India strategic partnership is getting stronger,” she posted. “We’re working on a Strategic Agenda based on growth with an ambitious FTA, tech & innovation, and security & defence. I look forward to adopting it with Prime Minister @narendramodi at our next Summit.”

India and the EU are currently negotiating a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that both sides hope will significantly boost economic ties and open up new avenues in digital innovation, supply chain resilience, and defense collaboration.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar interacted with members of the Indian community in Belgium and Luxembourg, updating them on India’s diplomatic and developmental priorities. He underscored the steady progress of India-Belgium ties and detailed India’s efforts to tackle terrorism and promote prosperity.
The External Affairs Minister also held meetings with key members of the European Parliament, including David McAllister, Sandro Gozi, and Nikos Papandreou, to discuss mutual interests and legislative cooperation. He was accompanied by his wife, Kyoko Jaishankar, and India’s Ambassador to Belgium, Saurabh Kumar.
