EIC Saurabh Shukla Explains FCRA Debate, Says India Can Safeguard

Date:

EIC Saurabh Shukla, founder of Newsmobile and Chief Consulting Editor of Republic Media Network, said US Congressman Riley Moore’s remarks on India’s proposed FCRA amendments should be viewed in the broader political context and not as a reflection of official US policy.

Shukla noted that the US is less than 100 days away from midterm elections, and such statements by lawmakers can sometimes be influenced by domestic political considerations.

He reiterated that India is a secular democracy where Christians are an integral part of society and enjoy equal rights and freedom.

Speaking on the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), Shukla said India is well within its rights to regulate foreign funding in matters related to national security, just as other countries protect their own interests. He stressed that the proposed FCRA framework is not directed against any particular religion.

Shukla said India-US ties are a multifaceted partnership and a statement by an individual lawmaker should not define the overall relationship.

He added that the Indian Embassy in Washington and relevant authorities can engage with the Congressman to ensure he understands the ground realities in India.

He also cautioned against fear-mongering, saying claims about government takeovers of churches create unnecessary concerns among communities.

Shukla highlighted that India has a long history of protecting religious institutions and said any concerns should be addressed through diplomatic channels rather than individual political remarks.
