New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has unveiled staggering figures regarding the seizures made during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. According to the latest release from the ECI, the value of seizures is set to cross the Rs. 9000 crore mark, having already reached Rs. 8889.74 crores.
In a statement, the ECI highlighted its enhanced vigilance against inducements, including drugs and psychotropic substances, which has resulted in significant seizure actions and a continuous surge in confiscated assets.
The ECI reported that drug seizures have accounted for the highest share, comprising 45% of the total value, amounting to Rs. 3958 crores. During one of the review visits, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts based on precise intelligence to counter the influence of drug money in elections and safeguard the future of the youth and the nation as a whole.
The ECI revealed that cash seizures amount to Rs. 849.15 crores, while over 5.39 crore liters of liquor worth Rs. 814 crores have been confiscated. Additionally, precious metals worth Rs. 1260.33 crores and other seized items and freebies amount to Rs. 2006.56 crores.
Among the states, Gujarat leads in seizures with a collective amount of Rs. 1461.73 crores, followed by Rajasthan with Rs. 1133.82 crores and Punjab with Rs. 734.54 crores. Notably, this marks the highest-ever seizure recorded in the 75-year history of Lok Sabha elections, underscoring the Election Commission’s unwavering commitment to upholding the democratic process and ensuring free and fair elections.
