Ex-Ivy League Student Arrested For UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s Murder

Date:

A 26-year-old man, Luigi Mangione, was arrested on Monday in connection with the targeted killing of a health insurance executive in New York.

He has been charged with possessing fake IDs and a firearm. The arrest follows a nationwide manhunt after the high-profile murder.

Mangione appeared in a Pennsylvania court on Monday evening, where he was arraigned by Altoona police, accompanied by detectives from the NYPD. He is scheduled to appear in court again on December 23.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed that Mangione would face murder charges in New York, emphasizing that such acts of violence should never be used to settle differences.

Police have not confirmed reports that the words “delay” and “deny,” terms commonly used by insurers to reject claims, were found on casings at the crime scene, which might suggest a political motive.

Mangione was captured after a tip-off from McDonald’s staff in Altoona, where he was found wearing a mask and beanie while using a laptop and presenting a fake ID. Police discovered a “ghost gun,” capable of firing 9mm rounds and fitted with a suppressor, potentially made with a 3D printer.

When asked about recent visits to New York, Mangione reportedly became anxious and quiet. Investigators also found one of the fake IDs linked to a Manhattan hostel where he had stayed before the murder, along with documents revealing his “motivation and mindset.”

Born in Maryland and educated at the University of Pennsylvania, Mangione had been living in Hawaii prior to the killing. He previously worked as a data engineer at TrueCar, an online auto marketplace, before leaving the company in 2023.

New York Mayor Eric Adams stated that Mangione fit the description of the suspect they were searching for and had items linking him to the crime. Police also noted that Mangione seemed to harbor “ill-will towards corporate America.”

Who is Luigi Mangione?

Luigi Mangione, who was arrested by New York Police as a “strong person of interest,” is a software engineer and Ivy League graduate. He comes from a well-known family in Baltimore; his grandfather, Nicholas Mangione, was a prominent real estate developer, and his grandmother, Mary C. Mangione, was a philanthropist, CNN reported.

According to Mangione’s LinkedIn profile, he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. This was confirmed by a university spokesperson to The Guardian.

The profile also mentions that Mangione worked at TrueCar for four years, but the company told The Guardian that he had not been employed there since 2023. “While we generally don’t comment on personnel matters, we can confirm that Luigi Mangione has not been an employee of our company since 2023,” they said.

CNN also reported that Mangione is registered to vote at his family’s address in Cockeysville, a suburb of Baltimore, according to the state’s voter registration lookup website.
