Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan Sentenced To 14 Years In Corruption Case

Date:

A Pakistani court on Friday convicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in a high-profile corruption case, sentencing Khan to 14 years in prison.

Khan, who has been in custody since August 2023 facing around 200 charges, claims that the latest conviction is an effort to silence him. After the verdict, he told reporters in the courtroom, “I will neither make any deal nor seek any relief.”

The anti-corruption court, which met in the jail near Islamabad where Khan is being held, convicted both him and his wife in relation to the Al-Qadir Trust, a welfare foundation they established together. Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the verdict, stating, “The prosecution has proven its case,” and sentenced Khan to 14 years in prison and Bibi to seven years.

Bibi, a faith healer who had recently been released on bail, was arrested at the court following the conviction, as confirmed by her spokeswoman, Mashal Yousafzai.

Khan maintains that the charges against him are politically motivated, aimed at preventing his return to power. The sentencing, which had been delayed multiple times, is widely seen as an effort to pressure Khan into striking a deal with the military to retreat from politics.

Since his ousting in 2022, Khan has led an aggressive campaign, openly criticizing Pakistan’s military leadership. He has faced four previous convictions, two of which were overturned, while the sentences in the other two cases were suspended. However, Khan remains in prison due to pending legal cases.
