Patrushev’s visit comes at a time when External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is in Moscow for wide-ranging talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that the two ministers will meet later today in Moscow, marking an important diplomatic engagement ahead of President Vladimir Putin’s expected visit to India in December.
During the meeting, Jaishankar and Lavrov are expected to review the calendar of upcoming political interactions between the two countries and discuss major regional and global developments. Key areas of cooperation within multilateral groupings—including the SCO, BRICS, the United Nations, and the G20—are also likely to feature prominently.
Jaishankar is currently heading the Indian delegation for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Council of Heads of Government meeting, being hosted by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on November 18.
Russian officials have indicated that Monday’s discussions will also focus on preparations for the 23rd annual India-Russia summit. President Putin’s visit to New Delhi, planned for early December, is expected to reaffirm the longstanding strategic partnership between the two nations.
