Just hours after a phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which the Indian leader unequivocally rejected any third-party mediation, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday once again claimed credit for preventing the war between India and Pakistan.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, “I stopped a war between Pakistan and India. I love Pakistan.” He went on to praise both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, for what he described as their “extremely influential” roles in de-escalating tensions. “They were going at it and they are both nuclear countries… I stopped a war between two major nuclear nations, but I don’t think there’s a story written about it,” he added.

His remarks came just hours after a phone call with Prime Minister Modi, during which the Indian leader clarified that India had never accepted third-party mediation and reiterated New Delhi’s long-standing position on bilateral issues with Pakistan.
“India has never accepted mediation, does not and will never do so,” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, quoting the Prime Minister. Misri added that during the flare-up between May 7 and 10 this year, which saw brief but intense military activity along the Line of Control, the Indian and Pakistani armies de-escalated without any involvement from Washington or any other third party.
“There was no discussion of a U.S.-India trade deal or any mediation—at any time, or at any level—during that period,” Misri added, firmly countering Trump’s narrative.

This is not the first time Trump has made such claims. He has repeatedly claimed that he stopped between India and Pakistan conflict.
