Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Monday evening reshared a post on Truth Social praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and declaring that India could count on the United States “100 per cent”, further underlining the growing closeness between New Delhi and Washington.
The repost featured a message by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor along with a video clip from the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, where Trump addressed the gathering through a live phone call.
“President Trump called me tonight. He had a clear message: ‘I love Prime Minister Modi. We’ve never been closer to India. I’m a big, big fan of Prime Minister Modi…,’” Gor had posted on X earlier.
During the event, Gor held his phone to the microphone, allowing guests and diplomats to hear Trump’s remarks directly.
“I just want to say hello to everybody. I love the Prime Minister. Modi is great, he is my friend,” Trump said during the call. “We’ve never been closer to India and India can count on me 100 per cent and our country.”
The US President also assured continued American support for India, saying, “If they ever need help, they know where to call, they call right here.”
The event at Bharat Mandapam was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, senior diplomats and members of the visiting American delegation.
Trump also praised Rubio during his remarks, calling him the “greatest secretary of state in the history of the US.”
Rubio, currently on an official visit to India, addressed the gathering as well and described India as a key strategic partner for the United States amid expanding cooperation in trade, security and Indo-Pacific affairs.
Trump concluded his telephonic address with another message for the Indian Prime Minister, saying, “Say hello to Prime Minister Modi and let him know I’m a big fan.”
