The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, needled India again on Tuesday after commenting on the treatment of minorities last week. “Naya Pak is Quaid’s Pak & we will ensure that our minorities are treated as equal citizens, unlike what is happening in India,” he tweeted from his @ImranKhanPTI handle.
Last week Khan had made similar comments about India. At that time it was construed to be a response to Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah’s controversy-triggering remarks on mob lynching cases. Shah had remarked about the killing of a policeman in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district earlier this month.
His struggle for a separate nation for Muslims only started when he realised that Muslims would not be treated as equal citizens by the Hindu majority. “We have to help our minorities and protect them as Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah laid emphasis on granting equal rights to minorities,” Imran Khan said on December 23 while addressing a gathering. “If justice is not given to the weak, this only leads to an uprising. The people of East Pakistan were not given their rights and this was the main reason behind the creation of Bangladesh,” he added.
“We will show the Modi government how to treat minorities…Even in India, people are saying that minorities are not being treated as equal citizens,” the Pak PM added.

The Indian actor responded, “I think Mr Khan should be walking the talk in his own country instead of commenting on issues that don’t concern him. We have been a democracy for 70 years and we know how to look after ourselves,” according to The Indian Express.
Cricketer Mohammad Kaif also responded to Imran Khan’s comment and in a tweet on Monday said that “There were around 20% minorities at the time of Partition in Pakistan,less than 2% remain now. On the other hand minority population has grown significantly in India since Independence. Pakistan is the last country that should be lecturing any country on how to treat minorities.”
