Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered India’s support to Myanmar and Thailand after a powerful earthquake struck the two countries, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The tremors were also felt in several cities in India, including Kolkata and Imphal.
On X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed concern for the affected areas and assured India’s readiness to help.
He wrote, “Concerned by the situation following the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of all. India stands ready to offer any assistance. I’ve instructed our authorities to remain on standby and asked the MEA to stay in contact with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”

The earthquake, measuring 7.7 in magnitude, hit central Myanmar at 12:50 pm local time on Friday, followed by an aftershock of 6.8. The epicenter was located 16 km northwest of Sagaing city at a depth of 10 km, according to the US Geological Survey. While casualties have been reported, no tsunami warning was issued.
A viral video showed a skyscraper under construction in Bangkok’s Chatuchak area collapsing, with reports stating that 43 workers are trapped beneath the debris.
