‘India-US Have A Broader Relationship’: NM EIC Saurabh Shukla On Deportation Row

Date:

As the United States deported a group of illegal Indian immigrants via a military aircraft, NewsMobile Editor-in-Chief Saurabh Shukla emphasized that the incident must be viewed within the larger framework of India-US relations. Speaking about the recent deportations, Shukla stated that both nations share a deep and evolving partnership, with ongoing cooperation on various critical issues, including counterterrorism and visa facilitation for Indian professionals.

“This is part of a broader understanding between India and the US,” Shukla remarked. He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the US, his first since Donald Trump’s re-election will be a significant milestone in bilateral relations. Key discussions are expected to revolve around terrorism, trade, and addressing concerns related to visa delays for Indian professionals, particularly H1B visa holders.

Addressing concerns over the deported individuals, Shukla noted that the Indian government has taken a responsible stance by ensuring the return of those who had violated US immigration laws. “The government of India has said it will do the right thing—meaning it will take back individuals who entered another sovereign country illegally,” he stated. He also revealed that through careful diplomatic negotiations, India successfully prevented some deportees from being sent to Guantanamo Bay, a detention facility notorious for housing individuals deemed a security threat by the US.

Shukla further elaborated on the verification process undertaken by the Indian authorities, ensuring that all deportees were indeed Indian nationals before facilitating their repatriation. “The Indian government engaged judiciously, verified their nationalities, and ensured their return. The US government was requested to expedite the repatriation process, and that is exactly what’s happening,” he said.

The deportation of illegal immigrants, according to Shukla, should not be misrepresented by opposition, as it undermines the contributions of millions of law-abiding Indian professionals working in the US. He stressed that illegal immigration tarnishes India’s global reputation and creates additional hurdles for legitimate visa applicants.

“Every time the opposition raises concerns over the deportation of illegal immigrants, they do a disservice to millions of hardworking Indians abroad. These legal immigrants are sending remittances back to India. They’re making sure that they’re serving their motherland as well and making them proud. That’s a problem every time an Indian faces a visa delay is because of these illegals which are going,” he asserted.

Shukla also called for stricter action against human trafficking networks and agents who mislead young Indians into attempting illegal entry into the US. “They should be talking about taking action against cartels and touts who are misleading these young people for going to US without any visa, taking illegal entry.,” he said.

The NewsMobile EIC also pointed out that deportations of illegal immigrants are not a new phenomenon, having occurred even during the tenure of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. “As the External Affairs Minister stated, this has been happening since 2009, it’s been having in the time of Manmohan Singh as well,” he added.
