India vs Australia: Aussies beat India by three-wickets, take 1-0 series lead

Australia edged out India by three wickets (127/7) in a last-ball thriller in the first T20 International at Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

Maxwell was the top scores for Aussies with 56 runs. Short also contributed 37 runs before he was run out. For India, Bumrah was the pick of the bowler with three wickets. Chahal and Pandya took 1 wicket each.

Carey sounded optimistic of Australia’s chances and told Cricket Australia, “The guys have had their Big Bash campaign just finished and they are in T20 mode so we will hit the two T20s and then get stuck into the five one-dayers. The confidence is all for all the players and we are really excited now to get playing, get stuck into the Indians.”

The hosts were put into bat, and despite losing Rohit Sharma early on to Jason Behrendorff (1/16), India made a swift start to their innings, Rahul and Virat Kohli combining for 55.

Opener KL Rahul’s scored a stylish half-century on comeback while Jasprit bumrah became the second man to take 50 T20I wickets for India.

The last two T20I series between both sides, in 2017 and 2018, have ended in a (1-1) draw.

India will look to bounce back in the second T20I which takes place on Wednesday, 27 February in Bangalore.
