India on Saturday voiced strong support for the high-stakes summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, describing their initiative to pursue peace as “highly commendable.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the initiative demonstrated commendable leadership by both Washington and Moscow. “India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable,” the statement noted.
India also reiterated its long-standing position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable way forward in the Ukraine conflict. “India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,” the MEA said.

The meeting, held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, marked the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since Trump’s return to the White House. Spanning more than three hours behind closed doors, the talks centered largely on Ukraine, though broader aspects of US-Russia relations were also discussed.
While the discussions did not yield a breakthrough, Trump described them as “very productive,” pointing to areas of common ground as well as issues still unresolved. He emphasized that progress had been made but cautioned that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.” Trump said he planned to brief NATO partners and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the outcome.
