Fahad Ahmed Khan Suri, the Consul General of India in Jeddah, visited Abdul Shoeb Mohammed at a Madinah hospital to assess his condition and extend consular assistance.
Hospital authorities have assured the Consulate that Shoeb is receiving the highest level of care. In an official update, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah noted, “Concerned hospital authorities have informed that the best possible medical care is being provided to him. The consulate wishes him a speedy recovery.”
The accident is being described as one of the most devastating tragedies involving pilgrims from Telangana abroad. Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar confirmed that 45 Indian Umrah pilgrims from Hyderabad and surrounding regions lost their lives in the incident, leaving Shoeb as the only survivor.
The group had been travelling from Makkah to Madinah when their bus collided with an oil tanker roughly 25 km before Medina, triggering an explosion that engulfed the vehicle in flames within minutes.
A total of 54 pilgrims left Hyderabad for Jeddah on November 9 for an Umrah trip scheduled until November 23. While four pilgrims proceeded to Madinah by car and another four remained in Makkah for personal reasons, the remaining 46 pilgrims boarded the bus involved in the crash.
The impact and subsequent fire were fatal for 45 passengers, who died at the scene as the bus was completely burnt. Only Md Abdul Shoeb survived.
Following the incident, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah established a 24/7 control room to assist families and coordinate with Saudi authorities. Contact numbers shared for support include 8002440003 (toll-free), 00966122614093, 00966126614276, and 00966556122301 (WhatsApp).
Expressing grief, the Consulate stated, “Our deepest condolences to the bereaved families.” It added that the Embassy in Riyadh and the Jeddah Consulate are working closely with the Saudi Haj and Umrah Ministry, local authorities, and relevant Umrah operators to ensure all necessary procedures and support are provided.
