Evian (France): As the announced date for the formal signing of the peace deal with Iran approaches, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday reiterated his warning that military action could resume if the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is not honoured.
Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the 52nd G7 Summit, Trump said non-compliance with the proposed agreement, including the 60-day negotiation period regarding Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, could have serious consequences.
“It’s a Memorandum of Understanding. If it doesn’t get done in 60 days, that’s alright — we go back to bombing. I don’t want to do that because it’s so good, but we might have to because we’re never going to let them have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
He also stated, “If we didn’t do this deal, we could have dropped more bombs for another three weeks, two weeks, four weeks, two years.”
Highlighting the objectives of the agreement, Trump said, “On Sunday, we reached an agreement with Iran that achieves everything we set out to accomplish, everything and much more. Ending the current conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and preventing Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon. That’s what it was all about. That was about 99%. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. They can’t develop it, buy it. They can never have a nuclear weapon.”
Earlier in the day, Trump also said the MoU was “not final” and warned of renewed military action if the terms were not met. He said, “It’s not final. It’s a memorandum of understanding, and if I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting them, dropping bombs on their heads. If I don’t like it, if they don’t behave, we’ll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head. Okay? ‘Cause they’ve misbehaved for 47 years.”
Preliminary details indicate the proposed framework includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending the American blockade, a 60-day negotiation period on uranium enrichment, sanctions relief and a structured ceasefire agreement involving Israel and Hezbollah.
