Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply on Saturday as Iran warned the United States, the United Kingdom, and France that their regional bases and naval vessels could become targets if they attempt to thwart Tehran’s ongoing strikes on Israel.
The stark warning from Iran came after a devastating Israeli airstrike struck the Shahid Chamran Nobonyad Complex in northeast Tehran, a housing facility linked to Iran’s Ministry of Defense — killing at least 60 people, according to Iranian state media.
In a retaliatory barrage, Iran launched scores of missiles at Israel, with some reportedly landing near key government and military installations. One of the Iranian missiles struck close to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Ministry of Defense headquarters in the highly fortified Kirya area of Tel Aviv.
The conflict has already claimed lives on both sides. In Israel, three people have been confirmed dead and several more injured since the Iranian counterattacks began. Meanwhile, Iran is mourning the loss of two top military figures — Gen. Gholamreza Mehrabi, deputy of intelligence, and Gen. Mehdi Rabbani, deputy of operations for the armed forces’ general staff — both killed in Israeli airstrikes.
