IRGC Strikes Threaten Iran-US Peace Efforts: EIC Saurabh Shukla On Fresh Escalation

Date:

Washington: Editor-in-Chief Saurabh Shukla has warned that fresh attacks by elements of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on US military assets represent a dangerous escalation, despite a fragile ceasefire and ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Speaking from Washington, D.C., Shukla said discussions were underway on a potential framework agreement under which Iran would abandon its nuclear program, transfer enriched uranium under international supervision, permit demining operations in the Strait of Hormuz, and, in return, receive sanctions relief and reconstruction assistance.
However, he noted that hardline IRGC commanders have opposed the proposed terms, arguing that they are unfair and rejecting demands related to Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

According to Shukla, moderate Iranian leaders favor a deal as the country grapples with severe economic challenges and military setbacks. However, he said IRGC factions appear to be exercising increasing influence over military decision-making.

The latest attacks, he added, have significantly diminished the prospects for a breakthrough and could undermine efforts to secure a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, as well as facilitate access for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to Iran’s nuclear materials.

Shukla further noted that the United States had signaled that the military phase of the conflict was effectively over. However, he warned that continued attacks on American assets could leave Washington with little choice but to respond.

He said the conflict appears to be entering its final stage but cautioned that any renewed escalation could delay the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, disrupt global energy supplies and intensify economic pressures, particularly for Asian economies, including India.
