In a dramatic turn of events, Major General Herzi Halevi, the head of Israel’s military, announced his resignation on Monday, taking full responsibility for the defense forces’ failure to prevent the deadly Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
The resignation, confirmed through a letter made public by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), marks a significant shift in Israel’s military leadership as the country continues to recover from one of the darkest days in its history.
Halevi, acknowledging the shortcomings of the military’s response during the assault, expressed regret over the loss of lives and the unprecedented nature of the attack, which saw over 1,200 Israelis killed, most of them civilians. He also noted that while the military had achieved some success in the months following the attack, Israel’s war goals were far from fulfilled.

Additionally, Major General Yaron Finkelman, the head of Israel’s southern command responsible for overseeing Gaza operations, also resigned. The resignations come in the wake of a fragile ceasefire agreement with Hamas that brought a temporary end to the 15-month-long conflict, which was triggered by the catastrophic October 7 attack.
The October 7 attack, which included a coordinated assault from Hamas, also saw 251 Israeli civilians taken hostage, a situation that deepened the crisis and intensified global scrutiny of Israel’s defense mechanisms.
