Karnataka Speaker K R Ramesh resigns, minutes after Yediyurappa wins trust vote

Soon after Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa won the trust vote on Monday against his government in the Assembly, Speaker K R Ramesh tendered his resignation from the House.

Ramesh handed over his resignation letter to the Deputy Speaker Krishna Reddy and said during his 14-month-long tenure as the Speaker, he had worked according to his conscience and in accordance with the Constitution. “I have upheld the dignity of office to the best of my ability,” he added.

Earlier, newly-sworn in Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa won the confidence motion by voice vote in the state Assembly.

Moving the trust vote, he said he will not be involved in vindictive politics and requested Opposition’s cooperation. “Forget and forgive is something I believe in. I love people who oppose me as well,” he said.

Earlier on Sunday, Kumar disqualified 11 rebel lawmakers of the Congress and three from HD Kumaraswamy’s Janata Dal (Secular).
