The Democratic National Convention is glittering away to glory on the third day. If reports are to believe, Mindy Kaling is the evening’s M.C., and the “Saturday Night Live” stalwart Kenan Thompson made a cameo.
The convention is living up to its star-studded line-up. However, what surprised everyone was when talk show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey walked on the stage to support presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
“We’re now so fired up, we can’t wait to leave here and do something, and what we’re gonna do is elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States,” Oprah said.
Oprah, who built her career in Chicago, spoke for 10 minutes and said, “Let us choose common sense over nonsense.”
In the “The Best of America”, she addressed thousands of delegates. “America is an ongoing project that required commitment …and every once in a while, it requires standing up to life’s bullies.”
One of the most powerful
Pitch from @Oprah the decency and respect is on the ballot in 2024.
Common sense can tell
You @KamalaHarris and @Tim_Walz can give you decency. Let’s choose common sense over nonsense. She had a rocking performance at the #DNC2024 asking independents… pic.twitter.com/SO3qMTZMnR— Saurabh Shukla सौरभ शुक्ल (@isaurabhshukla) August 22, 2024
“When we stand together, it is impossible to conquer us.”
This is the first time Oprah has spoken on a grand DNC stage. In the past, Oprah has been vocal about her support for the Democratic candidates. In 2020, she rallied for President Biden and Harris.
In an interview, Oprah said, “I was thinking the other day, ‘I wish Maya [Angelou] were alive to see it,'” Winfrey told People Magazine in 2020. “But maybe she’s working it on the other side. Because there’s no way to measure what the election of Kamala Harris means for all women, all colours, everywhere.”
In 2007, Oprah also supported her fellow Chicago-mate, Barack Obama. Oprah hosted fund-raisers to round up votes for Obama.
However, in 2016, Oprah stayed away from politics and was not actively involved in Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
Oprah founded OWN Your Vote under the Oprah Winfrey Network in 2020 to fight voter suppression nationwide.
