Mumbai Indians put on a clinical display to notch up a composed four-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, chasing down 163 in the 19th over. The win lifted MI to seventh on the points table, while SRH—despite having the same number of points as Chennai Super Kings from seven games—slipped to ninth due to a lower net run rate.
Opting to bowl first on a slightly damp surface, MI made the most of the conditions early on. Rahul Chahar, with tight lines and clever variations, set the tone with an excellent opening spell. While the Sunrisers’ openers—Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma—survived a few close calls, they struggled to impose themselves. Sharma managed a brisk 40 before perishing, while Head’s scratchy stay ended at 28. Ishan Kishan’s lean run continued as he fell for another single-digit score.
SRH never really found momentum on a tacky pitch, with even Heinrich Klaasen appearing out of sorts until a late burst in the final two overs alongside Tilak Varma. Their flurry of strokes dragged the total to 162/5, a score that looked underwhelming given the dew setting in.
Mumbai’s chase began with intent. Rohit Sharma came out blazing, launching into a short cameo before falling early. Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav kept the scoreboard ticking, playing aggressive yet calculated strokes. Both departed after getting starts, but the platform was solid.
Will Jacks stood tall with a mature knock that anchored the middle phase of the innings. Hardik Pandya added a punchy cameo to tie the scores, but MI did lose a couple of wickets and DRS reviews in the final stretch, creating brief jitters. Nevertheless, the experienced unit held its nerve, crossing the finish line in the 19th over to seal two crucial points.
For SRH, the loss extended a worrying trend—they’ve now lost all three of their away matches this season. With issues in both top-order consistency and adaptability on trickier surfaces, it’s back to the drawing board for them.
