External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday confirmed that trade negotiations between India and the United States are actively underway but cautioned against drawing premature conclusions, emphasizing that no agreement has been finalized yet.
Speaking at a media briefing, Jaishankar acknowledged the complexity of the ongoing discussions, noting that Indian negotiators are currently engaged in the process. “Between India and the US, trade talks have been going on. These are very complicated and intricate negotiations,” he said.

His remarks come in response to US President Donald Trump’s earlier statement from Doha, where he claimed that India had extended an offer for a near zero-tariff trade deal on a reciprocal basis. “They have offered us a deal where we’re basically they’re willing to literally charge us no tariff,” Trump said during a press conference.
EAM Jaishankar, however, clarified that no decisions have been made. “Nothing is decided, you know. But any trade deal has to be mutually beneficial. It has to work for both countries, and I think that would be our expectation from any deal. Until that happens, any judgment on it would be premature,” he said.
