Kathmandu: The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 1,127, while 4,858 people remain missing, as rescue teams continue search and recovery operations for the eighth consecutive day.
According to the Nepal police, 348 bodies have been recovered from Chitwan, 217 from Nawalparasi East, 190 from Nawalparasi West and 155 from Nuwakot. Another 66 bodies were recovered from Gorkha, 59 from Dhading, 45 from Rasuwa and 38 from Tanahu.
Postmortem and legal identification procedures had been completed for 1,113 bodies, while 95 bodies had been handed over to their relatives.
Details of 911 unidentified bodies have been uploaded on the Nepal Police website to help families identify their missing relatives.
Security forces have so far rescued 6,541 people from flood-affected areas, while search operations are continuing for 4,858 missing persons.
Authorities have deployed 7,912 police personnel across the affected areas for search and rescue operations, relief distribution and management of recovered bodies.
Police teams are also evacuating families from high-risk areas, clearing roads blocked by debris and coordinating relief and rescue efforts with local authorities and residents.
The flash floods, triggered by a collapse or avalanche of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border, devastated several towns and villages in northern and central Nepal on August 26.
The disaster has also left hundreds of foreign nationals missing. Nepal authorities said 583 foreigners from more than 30 nationalities are among those missing in the country, while another 261 foreigners from 23 countries are reported missing in China.
Indians constitute one of the largest groups among the foreigners missing in Nepal, with 275 Indian citizens and 128 people of Indian origin reported missing, according to New Delhi.
The US State Department has also reported 85 American citizens missing in the disaster.
Reports citing Nepal’s tourism authorities and diplomatic missions said 62 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 42 Australians and 33 British nationals are also among those missing.
Search and rescue operations remain underway as authorities continue efforts to locate survivors, recover bodies and provide assistance to affected communities.
