Paris: Indian grappler Aman Sehrawat made history at the Paris Olympics on Friday by clinching a bronze medal in the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling event. The 21-year-old, competing in his first-ever Olympic Games, secured a decisive 13-5 victory against Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz.

Aman’s triumph not only adds a sixth medal to India’s tally at the ongoing Games—comprising one silver and five bronze—but also sets a new record as he surpasses PV Sindhu to become the youngest Indian athlete to win an Olympic medal. His achievement is particularly notable as it brings India its first wrestling medal at Paris 2024.
The bout saw Cruz take an early lead by executing a single-leg takedown, earning the first point of the match. However, Aman quickly retaliated, targeting Cruz’s shoulders and pushing him out of the blue zone to gain two points.
Cruz managed to regain the lead with another leg hold, but Aman once again surged ahead by the end of the first three minutes.
In the final moments of the match, Aman solidified his lead, securing two more points with only 37 seconds left. Despite a last-ditch effort from Cruz, Aman added another point to finish the match with a commanding 13-5 scoreline, nearly achieving victory by technical superiority.
This victory marks India’s first wrestling medal at the Olympics since 2008. Earlier in the competition, Aman reached the semi-finals with an impressive 12-0 win over Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakanov, showcasing his technical prowess. However, he faced a setback in the semi-final, losing to Japan’s Rei Higuchi in a match that ended swiftly with a 10-0 defeat by technical superiority.
