Paris: Serbian tennis icon Novak Djokovic has advanced to his first Olympic final by defeating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals of the men’s singles event. This victory sets up a highly anticipated gold medal match against Spain’s rising star Carlos Alcaraz, marking a rematch of their Wimbledon 2024 final clash.
Carlos Alcaraz, 21, a three-time Grand Slam champion, has displayed impeccable form in France, defeating all his opponents in straight sets on his way to the men’s singles final. In the semi-finals, the third-ranked Alcaraz dominated Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory, securing his spot in the gold medal match on his Olympic debut.
World No. 2 Novak Djokovic, 37, has also had an impressive run leading up to the final. He faced his arch-rival and two-time Olympic gold medallist Rafael Nadal of Spain in the second round, emerging victorious in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
In the semi-finals, Djokovic defeated 11th seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy 6-4, 6-2, marking his first appearance in the men’s singles final after five Olympic attempts. Djokovic previously won a bronze medal at Beijing 2008.
The head-to-head record between Djokovic and Alcaraz stands evenly at three wins each, including one victory each in two clay court matches. Their most recent encounter was a few weeks ago in the Wimbledon men’s singles final, where Alcaraz triumphed in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
Alcaraz has had a sensational run in 2024, securing back-to-back Grand Slam titles at the French Open and Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, is aiming to join the exclusive list of Golden Slam winners.
Achieving a Golden Slam requires a player to win all four Grand Slam titles at least once, along with an Olympic gold medal. Djokovic, the only player in men’s history to have won all four Grand Slams three times or more, will become the 13th player to achieve a Golden Slam if he wins on Sunday.
