Paris: The Indian hockey team has secured a thrilling victory over Great Britain in a tense penalty shootout on Sunday, advancing to the semi-finals of the Paris Olympics. This marks India’s second consecutive semi-final appearance. India will face the winner of the August 6 match between Germany and Argentina.

The game took a dramatic turn when Amit Rohidas was red-carded for a stick infraction, leaving India a player down. Despite this setback, India took a 1-0 lead shortly after the incident, with captain Harmanpreet Singh scoring from a penalty corner, marking his seventh goal at Paris 2024.

Great Britain responded just before halftime, with Lee Morton equalizing to bring the score to 1-1. In the second half, Great Britain failed to score, despite multiple opportunities.

The final decision came down to a penalty shootout at Yves-du-Manoir stadium, India scored all four of their attempts. While Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh saved one helping India to move into the semis of the tournament.

Earlier on Friday, the Indian hockey team made history by defeating Australia 3-2 in their final Pool B match at the Paris Olympics 2024, marking the first time since the 1972 Olympics that India has triumphed over Australia.
