Date:

Paris: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat made history at the Paris Olympics by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final in wrestling. In an impressive performance, Phogat defeated Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semifinals of the women’s 50kg freestyle category on Tuesday.

Phogat’s journey to the final has been remarkable. Earlier in the tournament, she stunned the world by defeating the top-ranked and defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the Round of 16. She followed this with a hard-fought victory over Ukraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarterfinals, winning 7-5.

On Wednesday, Vinesh will take on USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt, the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist for the gold.

This is Phogat’s third Olympic campaign, setting a record for the most appearances by any female Indian wrestler in the quadrennial event. Her achievement of reaching the final marks a significant milestone in Indian sports, as she stands on the cusp of winning a historic gold medal for the country.
