Paris Paralympics: Thulasimathi Murugesan Clinches Silver, Manisha Secures Bronze In Badminton

Indian shuttlers delivered outstanding performances on Monday at the Paris Paralympics, with Thulasimathi Murugesan earning a silver medal and Manisha Ramadass securing a bronze in the women’s singles SU5 category.

Thulasimathi Murugesan, 22, fought valiantly in her final against China’s defending champion, Qiu Xia Yang. Despite her best efforts, Murugesan was edged out, losing the match 17-21, 10-21, and settling for the silver medal.

Meanwhile, Manisha Ramadass delivered a dominant performance against Denmark’s third-seeded Cathrine Rosengren. Ramadass won the match with a commanding 21-12, 21-8 scoreline, securing the bronze medal and adding to India’s impressive tally at the Games.

India’s medal count at the Paris Paralympics has risen to 11, including two gold, four silver, and five bronze medals. The achievements of Murugesan and Ramadass highlight India’s growing prominence in para-badminton on the global stage.

The ongoing Paralympics have been a showcase of India’s growing strength in para-sports. On Monday, shuttler Nitesh Kumar won gold medal in men’s singles,, Nishad Kumar added to the nation’s silver collection by finishing second in the men’s high jump T47 event. Meanwhile, Indian parasprinter Preeti Pal made history on Sunday by clinching a bronze medal in the 200m T35 event, clocking in at 30.01 seconds.

This achievement made Preeti the first Indian woman athlete to win two medals in track and field events at either the Paralympics or the Olympics. Her earlier bronze came in the T35 100m race, where she recorded a personal best of 14.21 seconds.

The weekend also saw stellar performances from other Indian athletes. On Saturday, Rubina secured a bronze in the P2-Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 final with a score of 211.1 points. The day before, Avani Lekhara, the reigning Paralympic champion, struck gold in the women’s 10m air rifle event, setting a personal best of 249.7 points.

Shooter Mona Agarwal also added to India’s medal count by winning bronze in the same event. Additionally, Manish Narwal brought home a silver in the men’s P1 10m air pistol SH1 competition, further bolstering India’s position in shooting events.

This year, India has sent its largest-ever Paralympic contingent, with 84 athletes competing across 12 sports. The participation marks a significant increase in both numbers and medal aspirations, as the nation aims to surpass its previous achievements from the Tokyo Games.
