PM Modi Congratulates Newly Elected Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian

Date:

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the newly elected Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday. PM Modi expressed his eagerness to further enhance the longstanding bilateral relationship between India and Iran.

Masoud Pezeshkian secured a win in the presidential elections in Iran, CNN reported, citing Press TV. Out of 30.5 million votes counted in Friday’s runoff, Pezeshkian received over 16.3 million votes while his ultraconservative rival Saeed Jalili got more than 13.5 million votes.

According to the election headquarters under the auspices of the interior ministry, voter turnout in Iran’s presidential elections stood at 49.8 percent. Pezeshkian secured his presidency in a second round of voting, having garnered the most votes in the initial round, surpassing Jalili.

Snap elections were necessitated following the tragic helicopter crash in Iran’s remote northwest in May, which claimed the lives of President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials.
