Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s continued efforts to seek a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, saying the Indian leader has “good ideas” aimed at finding a solution acceptable to all sides.
Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Russia, Putin said Modi has consistently raised the issue of ending the conflict despite the close and friendly ties between India and Russia.
Putin said Modi has shown a strong interest in bringing the conflict to an end and has put forward ideas focused on finding mutually acceptable solutions.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of those world leaders who, despite our very good and even friendly relations, personal good relations, constantly raises the question and asks the question about putting an end to the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin said.
He described India’s position as neutral while emphasizing Modi’s interest in ending the hostilities.
Putin also thanked the prime minister for advocating a peaceful resolution and for his continued engagement on the issue.
“We are thankful for his desire to put an end to this conflict through peaceful means and as soon as possible,” Putin said.
Modi’s consistent call for dialogue
India has repeatedly maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
In an interview with Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun in August, Modi said India had maintained what he described as a “principled and humanitarian” approach to the conflict. He said both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had shared their perspectives with him on developments related to the war.
Modi also said India was willing to support meaningful efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement, citing its relations with both Russia and Ukraine.
“I believe, by virtue of our good relations with both sides, including key stakeholders, we can strengthen efforts dedicated to the restoration of an early and lasting peace in Ukraine,” Modi said.
Modi-Putin talks in New Delhi
Putin’s remarks come weeks after he met Modi on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
During their September meeting, the two leaders discussed bilateral and global issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, while also reviewing ways to expand economic cooperation.
The discussions included implementation of the Programme for Economic Cooperation 2030 and cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, energy, technology, defense and culture.
The latest comments from Putin underscore Moscow’s acknowledgment of Modi’s continued diplomatic engagement on the Ukraine conflict, alongside India’s broader efforts to maintain communication with both sides while calling for a peaceful resolution.
