PM Modi, President Putin Discuss Indians Serving In Russian Army

New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic win for India, Russia will discharge and facilitate the return of all Indians who are reportedly working for the Russian Army. This matter was raised by PM Modi in his interaction with the Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Ministry of External Affairs announced on X, “PM Narendra Modi sets off on a 2-nation visit to Russia and Austria. The first leg of the visit takes him to Moscow for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. An opportunity to further accelerate partnership.”

After his engagements in Russia, Prime Minister Modi will proceed to Austria on July 9-10. This visit marks a historic occasion as it will be the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Austria in 41 years.

Speaking to ANI, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the significance of the visit, noting it as an excellent opportunity for PM Modi and President Putin to discuss bilateral relations. “There was a bit of a delay in our annual summits. It is a good tradition. We are two countries with a strong history of working together. We value the need for an annual summit,” he said.

Indian Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, emphasized the importance of the visit, citing Russia’s role as a crucial source of energy resources for India and the expansion of trade in other areas. PM Modi is expected to have a private meeting with President Putin, attend a luncheon hosted by Putin, and visit an exhibition center. He will also address a gathering of the Indian community in Russia.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra shared details of the visit, stating that both leaders have maintained communication through multiple phone conversations since their last meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in 2022. “The last, that is the 21st, annual summit was held in New Delhi in December 2021. The two leaders met in September 2022 in Samarkand on the margins of the SCO summit in Uzbekistan. They have also stayed in touch through several telephonic conversations,” Kwatra said.

PM Modi will arrive in Moscow in the late afternoon of July 8, with President Putin hosting a private dinner upon his arrival. The visit will include restricted-level talks followed by delegation-level discussions led by the Prime Minister and the Russian President.

After Russia, PM Modi will travel to Austria to commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Austria. He will hold discussions with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer to strengthen bilateral ties and explore new avenues of cooperation.
