In a landmark bilateral visit to the US, President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will etch out a new paradigm for the US-India partnership.
According to senior Trump White House officials previewing the trip, President Trump is proud of his close relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and this official working visit will be special.
The visit at the White House will end with a dinner that highlights the special friendship and two leaders’ commitment to enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors, including trade, defence, energy, and infrastructure prioritising India as a key partner.
The administration is keen on prioritizing India as a key importer of US energy which is part of President Trump’s broader vision.
President Trump will stress the importance of a fair trade relationship and ensure India keeps its promise of further reducing tariffs.
During the visit, the two sides will promote the Quad partnership further, which includes the United States, India, Japan, and Australia. This strategic collaboration is seen as pivotal in addressing regional challenges and enhancing security in the Indo-Pacific.
Strengthening Defense Partnerships
The defence partnership between the US and India will grow stronger under this administration. The two countries are on the verge of signing a new defence framework and working to reduce the trade deficit. India will agree to buy more US defence hardware.
“President Trump has made it clear that the use of tariffs will be a key component of this strategy, and early signals from the Government of India have been received positively,” the official said responding to India’s moves to reduce tariffs on auto imports from the US.
The US is one of the largest trading partners of India with overall bilateral trade in good and services of USD 190 billion for the calendar year 2023.
The two sides will issue a joint statement post the visit.
The visit is expected to foster greater collaboration in technology and defence, further solidifying India’s role as a critical partner in the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy.
Energy and Infrastructure Collaboration
The partnership extends beyond defence, with discussions on U.S. energy sales and India’s potential to strengthen supply chains. The US is also looking at India as a partner there.
President Trump reiterated his vision of making America an energy powerhouse, while also recognizing India’s contributions to the energy sector and infrastructure development.
The leaders will also talk about the India-Middle East corridor, which has the potential to enhance connectivity and economic opportunities for both nations.
