Sindhu faced a tough match against China’s He Bingjiao, ultimately losing 19-21, 14-21 in the Round of 16 on Thursday. The Chinese shuttler kept Sindhu under constant pressure, avenging her previous loss to Sindhu in the Tokyo 2020 Games bronze medal match.
Since the sport made its Olympic debut at Barcelona in 1992, India has won three medals in badminton, all thanks to Sindhu (silver at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2020) and Saina Nehwal (bronze at London 2012).
Earlier, the world number three pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, also exited the Paris Olympics in the quarter-finals. Despite a strong start in the knockout stage, they succumbed to a 21-13, 14-21, 16-21 defeat, ending their Olympic journey.
Lakshya Sen is now the sole Indian competitor in badminton. Sen will take on Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals on Friday, aiming to secure a medal and uphold India’s legacy in the sport.
