Rahul Gandhi supports petition to revoke Jayant Sinha’s Harvard alumnus tag

Jayant Sinha is the midst of a self-created storm. After his father Yashwant Sinha condemned his act of  ‘garlanding’ the eight men convicted in the killing of coal trader Alimuddin Ansari in June, last year, in a case of alleged cow vigilantism in Ramgarh, Jharkhand, Rahul Gandhi has launched a salvo.

The Congress President Rahul Gandhi supported a petition against Union minister Jayant Sinha seeking withdrawal of his Harvard alumni status because he felicitated criminals convicted of lynching.

The petition has been launched by a student of Masters of Public Policy at Harvard University, Boston, where Sinha graduated from and sought that his alumni status be withdrawn for “honouring criminals”.

The petition to the President of Harvard University, Boston, has condemned the minister’s action, saying it “has shocked the nation and brought disrepute to the institution.”

Jayant Sinha tried to save face in a series of tweets saying that he unequivocally condemns all acts of violence, and rejected any type of vigilantism. But the damage had already been done, with parties including the Left condemning the act and former Mumbai police commissioner Julio Ribeiro, former chief information commissioner Wajahat Habibullah and 41 other retired bureaucrats demanding that Sinha be sacked for felicitating the eight convicts.
