In a surprising statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for US Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential elections. During the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin praised Harris for her “infectious laugh,” which he suggested is an indication that “everything is going well for her,” according to reports.
Earlier, Putin had voiced his support for President Joe Biden, calling him “a more experienced, predictable person, a politician of the old school.” He expressed respect for Biden’s decision to endorse Harris as his successor.
When asked about his preferred candidate now that Biden had dropped out, Putin responded by referencing Harris’ laugh, hinting that it could suggest positive prospects for her campaign.
Putin also made a remark that Harris’ upbeat attitude might mean she would be less likely to impose sanctions on Russia. The Russian President also pointed out that former US President Donald Trump had introduced more sanctions on Moscow than any other president.
These statements come at a time when reports suggest that the US is preparing to accuse Russia of attempting to interfere in the 2024 elections.
In response to Putin’s comments, the White House called on him to “stop interfering” in US elections. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby firmly stated, “The only people who should get to determine who the next president of United States is are the American people, and we would greatly appreciate it if Putin would, a) stop talking about our election, and b) stop interfering in it.”
