Madrid: Spain’s captain and third-highest appearance maker Sergio Busquets has announced his retirement from international football after his team got knocked out of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
The 34-year-old has decided to hang his international boots while sharing an emotional note for his fans. He said, “I would like to announce that after almost 15 years and 143 games, the time has come to say goodbye to the national team,”.

The defensive midfielder bagged the ultimate glory for his nation as they lifted the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The skipper also wished the team all the best for the future under new coach Luis de la Fuente, who replaced Luis Enrique after the World Cup 2022.
Sergio Busquets was part of the team that went on to lift the 2012 European Championship. With this, the ultimate trio of revered Barcelona Spanish midfielders comes to an end which also included Andres Iniesta and Xavi.
Busquets made his debut for La Roja against Turkey in April 2009 and went on to make 143 appearances, behind only Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos in the country’s history.
He is considered to be one of the most consistent and successful midfielders over the last ten years. For his entire career, he has played more than 700 games for Barcelona winning a number of titles including eight La Liga titles and three Champion Leagues.
