Colombo: Amid the economic crisis, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday announced the appointment of 17 cabinet ministers amid the growing anti-government protests and widespread agitation across the island nation.
HIGHLIGHTS
The appointment is made to ensure the smooth functioning of the administration.
The cabinet ministers were sworn in at the residence of the President. This is the third Cabinet reshuffle carried out by President Rajapaksa.
President Rajapaksa had earlier appointed four ministers to maintain the legitimacy and stability of the parliament amid the growing crisis.
According to reports, the opposition parties have opposed the move made by the President as young and inexperienced people have been given ministerial positions in the cabinet.
The decision was made after 26 ministers resigned from their posts amid widespread agitation and protest across the country
