New York: Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten half-century and Arshdeep Singh’s impressive four-wicket haul led India to a resounding seven-wicket victory over the USA in a Group A match of the T20 World Cup at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday.
India faced an early setback as they lost both openers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma within the initial three overs. With the scoreboard reading 10/2, the pressure was on India’s batting lineup. Despite a partnership between Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav, India suffered another setback when Pant fell to a skiddy delivery from Ali Khan that kept low, resulting in his dismissal.
Earlier in the first innings, Arshdeep Singh delivered an outstanding spell, securing four wickets as India successfully restricted the USA cricket team to a total of 110/8. Arshdeep finished with incredible figures of 4-9 while Hardik Pandya scalped two wickets, conceding 14 runs. For the USA, Steven Taylor slammed 24 while Nitish Kumar played a crucial knock of 27 off 23 balls.
Earlier, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first against the USA. USA captain Monank Patel misses out due to a niggle, with Aaron Jones stepping in to replace him as captain for the match.
After winning the toss Indian captain Rohit Sharma said, “We will bowl first. It has played better in the last two games, but you need to assess the conditions quickly and then let the game take over. It’s all about constantly getting better and keeping the momentum going. It’s important to do the right things. That was a great game to play, we didn’t have enough runs on the board, but the bowlers came to the party and won the game for us. We’re playing the same team.”
USA stand-in captain Aaron Jones at the toss said said, “We would have bowled first as well, there’s some help for the bowlers early. He’s having a niggle and should be back quickly. It should be a good game and we’re looking to play well. The camp is very positive, just looking to play some good cricket. Shayan Jahangir replaces Monank and Shadley is in for Nosthush.”
