In her first sit-down interview since becoming the 2024 presidential nominee for the Democrats, Kamala Harris defended her evolving stances on border security and climate policy on Thursday. Harris also promised to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet.
Talking to CNN’s Dana Bash, Harris went on to offer the most expansive explanation on why she’s changed some of her stances on fracking and immigration.
The 59 year-old Democrat nominee said she had already changed her position on fracking in 2020, when she said that Biden “will not end fracking.”
Blaming Trump on border security:
Trump has been attacking the Biden administration regarding the handling of the US-Mexico border issue, but Harris said Trump bears much of the blame for the border security problems he bemoans.
Harris also said that she does not support decriminalizing illegally crossing the border into the United States.
Refusing to engage in Identity Politics:
Earlier, Donald Trump had made a sexist commnet and questioned Harris’ racial identity, suggesting she’d previously identified as South Asian but “happened to turn Black” for political purposes.
To Trump’s remark, Harris said, “this is part of his same old tired playbook. Next question please.”
‘I own my mistakes’: Tim Walz
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate admitted his mistakes and said that he owns them.
Walz said, “My wife, the English teacher, told me my grammar’s not always correct.”
Walz had also said in his convention speech that he and his wife used IVF to conceive their children but clarified later that it was a different kind of fertility treatment.
“I certainly own my mistakes when I make them,” he said.
